Frequently Asked Questions

A: There is nothing mysterious about chiropractic. It is a natural method of healthcare that focuses on treating the causes of physical problems, rather than just treating the symptoms. Chiropractic is based on a simple but powerful premise. With a normally functioning spine and healthy nerve system, your body is better able to heal itself. That’s because your spine is the lifeline of your nervous system. It controls feeling, movement, and all function throughout your body.
A: Yes. Doctors of Chiropractic (also known as Chiropractors) are not medical doctors, but go through a similar education process to become licensed in the field of chiropractic care. In fact, educational requirements for chiropractors are among the most stringent of any health care profession.
A: A Chiropractic adjustment is the art of using a specific, controlled force in a precise direction that is applied to a spinal joint not moving properly, or “locked up”. The purpose of this natural and safe procedure is to correct structural alignment and eliminate interference in the nervous system. For the patient, this means improved spinal function, reduction in pain, and an overall improvement in health and wellness.
A: Chiropractors are known for their expertise in caring for patients with back pain, neck pain, and headaches. They also treat sports injuries and other disorders involving muscles, ligaments, and joints. The benefits of chiropractic care go beyond this and extend into general health as our core body structure affects overall function and health.
A: Yes, children can benefit from chiropractic care. Children are very physically active and experience many types of falls and blows from activities of daily living as well as from participating in sports. Injuries such as these may cause many symptoms including back and neck pain, stiffness, soreness or discomfort. Chiropractic care is always adapted to the individual patient. It is a highly skilled treatment, and in the case of children, very gentle.
A: Newborns go through a bit of trauma during childbirth. Slight pressure can help align the spine after birth to improve the nervous system. Sleep, behavior, attitude, and immune system functions can be enhanced through treatment.

A: This is a common myth that once you start going to a chiropractor, you will always need adjustments. How long you choose to benefit from chiropractic care is always up to you. We will recommend an individual plan of care for you to get out of pain as fast as possible, and to correct the problem to keep you out of pain. Then we will discuss the benefits of wellness or maintenance care.
A: No. The doctor evaluated each patient’s unique spinal problem and develops an individual course of care. Each chiropractic adjustment build on the one before. The resulting recommendations are based on years of training and experience. Each patient’s care is uniquely different from every other patient.
A: Yes. It is an unfortunate fact that more than half of those who had spinal surgery discover a return of their original symptoms months or years later. They then face the prospect of additional surgery. This too common occurrence is known as “failed back surgery syndrome”. Chiropractic man help prevent repeated back surgeries. In fact, if chiropractic care is used initially, back surgery can often be avoided in the first place.
A: No, however, chiropractic care is successful with a wide variety of health problems outside of “back” problems because of improved nerve system function. With a normal nerve supply, the body’s natural healing capacity can improve a variety of health problems.
A: Yes. Chiropractic has an excellent safety record. It is the result of a conservative and natural approach to health that avoids invasive procedures or addictive drugs. As proof, one merely has to compare malpractice rates between chiropractors and other healthcare professionals. Chiropractors’ malpractice premiums are a small fraction of those for medical doctors.
A: Any time is a good time for a better functioning nerve system. Pregnant mothers find that chiropractic adjustments help with pregnancy discomforts, like sciatica, improve their pregnancy, and make delivery easier for themselves and their baby. Also, certain chiropractic techniques can be used to help properly position the baby for delivery. Adjusting methods are always adapted to a patient’s size, weight, age, and condition of health.
A: Chiropractors take X-rays to reveal the internal structure and alignment of the spine. They are also looking for underlying disease processes and disorders of the spine such as spinal deterioration, arthritis of the spine, abnormal development, bone spurs, disc disorders, tumors and spinal curvature. X-rays also provide a blueprint for correcting the spine back to optimal health and alignment.
A: The first two appointments take about 45-60 minutes so that we can be extra thorough and give you the time you need. For following visits, you can expect to be out the door in at least 15 minutes, depending on your treatment plan.
A: Some procedures may require you to remove some pieces of clothing, however, most do not. If you have any questions or concern, bring them up immediately to the chiropractor.
A: The chiropractic care that you receive will be tailored to you and your needs, so it varies from person to person. After a consultation, thorough exam, and X-rays if necessary, the doctor will be able to share with you specifically what you need.
A: After reducing pain, the body needs to stabilize through exercises and stretches. We will be able to develop a routine that will help rehabilitate the area of concern.
A: Adjustment (or manipulation) of a joint may result in the release of a gas bubble between the joints, which makes a popping sound. The same thing occurs when you “crack” your knuckles. The noise is caused by the change of pressure within the joint, which results in has bubbles being released. There is usually minimal, if any, discomfort involved.
